Rick Moranis Returns to Acting Decades After Wife’s Tragic Death
Rick Moranis is officially stepping back into the spotlight, and fans who grew up watching him couldn’t be more excited.
The beloved actor made a rare public appearance at Amazon MGM’s CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday, April 15, where he helped introduce ‘Spaceballs 2,’ the long-awaited sequel to Mel Brooks’ cult classic. Moranis, 72, will reprise his role as Dark Helmet, marking his first live-action film appearance in nearly three decades.
Moranis has largely stayed out of Hollywood since the late ’90s. The actor stepped away from screen acting after the death of his wife, costume designer Ann Belsky, in 1991, choosing to focus on raising their children.

“I was working with really interesting people, wonderful people,” Moranis previously shared with The Hollywood Reporter in 2015. “I went from that to being at home with a couple of little kids, which is a very different lifestyle. But it was important to me. I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. My life is wonderful.”

The teaser shown at CinemaCon gave audiences a glimpse at Moranis’ return, with most of his appearance hidden behind Dark Helmet’s signature mask.
And Moranis wasn’t the only familiar face at the event. Original ‘Spaceballs’ stars Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga also took the stage, joined by newcomers including Lewis Pullman and Josh Gad, who co-wrote and produced the film.
The sequel, officially titled ‘Spaceballs: The New One,’ is set to hit theaters on April 23, 2027.
