The Arizona Diamondbacks’ offseason has thus far been dominated by rumors, not action.
After months of wondering whether the Diamondbacks were going to trade second baseman Ketel Marte, general manager Mike Hazen publicly declared that the three-time All-Star was off the table. That left fans waiting for weeks to learn if any more moves would be made.
On Thursday, those fans finally got a sliver of the action they were craving, even if it was in the form of a minor-league deal for a reliever who missed all of last season due to injury.
According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the Diamondbacks and right-handed reliever Derek Law agreed to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training on Thursday. Murray also reported that the deal will pay Law $1.5 million in base salary if he makes the major league roster, and includes an additional $500,000 in possible incentives.
Law spent the last two seasons as a member of the Washington Nationals, and he was excellent in 2024, posting a 2.60 ERA in 90 innings out of the bullpen. But he began last season on the injured list with flexor tendon tightness and after attempting to come back via rehab stint, he wound up having surgery in July.
The 35-year-old Law has pitched in eight major league seasons with six different teams — the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Minnesota Twins, Cincinnati Reds, and Nationals. He owns a career 3.69 ERA across 346 innings and has posted 4.1 bWAR.
The Arizona pitching staff lagged far behind the lineup last season, and injuries to key relief arms early in the year helped sink the club’s playoff chances. Law would surely love to be a part of the group that turns things around.
