3 Options for ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin’s Reported WWE Return
A new report from WrestleVotes Radio via Fightful Select indicates that WWE is actively discussing a potential return for “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Internal conversations within the company suggest that the Hall of Famer could make an appearance in the “very near future.”
While the specific nature of his role remains undisclosed, the timing is significant, aligning perfectly with the start of the “Road to WrestleMania.” With the Royal Rumble taking place this weekend and WrestleMania season ramping up, speculation is mounting over whether the “Texas Rattlesnake” will be involved with the company.
Since his in-ring return in 2022, Austin has maintained a strong relationship with WWE. In various interviews, he has confirmed that he stays in peak physical condition and remains open to creative pitches that “make sense.”
Although it is unclear if there are concrete plans for him to wrestle another match, he has not officially closed the door on the possibility since his bout with Kevin Owens. Austin notably turned down an appearance at WrestleMania XL due to filming commitments, a role that was ultimately filled by The Undertaker in the Night 2 main event.

Here are three potential options for his return:
One Final Match
The most exciting possibility remains one last match for the Bionic Redneck. Austin proved at WrestleMania 38 against Kevin Owens that he can still deliver a memorable performance that protects his legacy while entertaining the masses. With WrestleMania 42 taking place in Las Vegas—a short trip from his home in Nevada—the location is ideal. A dream match against a generational talent like CM Punk or a confrontation with a top heel could be the marquee attraction WWE needs to sell out the massive event.
Special Guest Referee
If Austin prefers to avoid the physical toll of a full match, inserting him as a special guest referee would be a perfect compromise. This role allows him to be a central figure in a high-stakes main event without carrying the match bell-to-bell. His authoritative presence would add instant credibility and chaos to a title fight, and fans would still get the satisfaction of seeing him hit a Stunner on an unruly competitor or manager to count the final pinfall.
A Legend’s Appearance
The safest and most likely option is a classic “Stone Cold” appearance involving a promo segment. Austin could interrupt a cocky villain, deliver a passionate monologue to energize the crowd, and dispense a few Stunners before celebrating with his signature beer bash. This role requires minimal physical risk but guarantees a massive pop, serving as a perfect nostalgia act to bridge the gap between generations and create a “WrestleMania Moment” without the pressure of a match.
